It was never their intention to have kits so early and they struggled with the accidental litter. Once, Cedarfoot even went as far as accusing Minnowtail that she'd had an affair with another, that these kits she now bore were not his own. It had only been that one time, after all. After a moon of fighting, making up and then fighting some more, both cats finally agreed to call a truce for the sake of the kits that were coming. Minnowtail had managed to convince her mate that she has not cheated, but she knew that he still had his doubts. A moon later and her kits were finally ready to come into the world. Her labor was a long and tiring one. It went smoothly at first. A bright red tom was the first to come. Newtkit banished all doubts that his father had ever had and the tom crumbled in front of Minnowtail, apologize profusely to her and wondering how he could have ever been so stupid. None of that mattered now, though. They found the love they'd lost with Newkit now born into the world and were now focused on the safety of their other kits. His mother's belly had been large by the end of her pregnancy so they knew that they would have many kits. The Medicine Cat checked in with Minnow often to see how she was faring and it seemed that all was well. A silver kit with dark tabby markings came next, another tom that they named Silverkit. It was after his birth that Minnow's breath became labored and short. Something was going terribly wrong now. Partly from pain, mostly from fear, the she-cat yowled out and then the world went black. Cedarfoot rushed to get the Medicine Cat. Minnow was passed out and still in labor. Aftering being told this, Spottedwing rushed with a strong-smelling herb that would bring her to. After she woke, all she could feel was pain in her belly. Spottedwing wouldn't let her give up though. She pushed the young queen to push through the pain. Some time passed, but Maplekit finally made it into the world. This little kit seemed sickly, however, and they worried about her. Minnow took the time to clean her well and make sure that she was dry. The pain slowly subsided and they thought that she was done. Not longer after the birth of Maplekit, however, she gave brith to two more kits, though these were still-born. The two were named, Foxkit and Sparrowkit, and then taken away by Cedarfoot. It broke Minnow's heart that, already, she had failed as a mother, but upon Cedar's return, he convinced her to focus on the kits that were still here and to be grateful that they survived, even though he wasn't sure if Maplekit would survive yet. Minnow put all that she had into her kits, however, and she refused to lose another. It was due to her tenacity that the sickly Maple pulled through and once she was healthy, it seemed that her kits grew up far too quickly for her liking. Newkit was always a curious kit, the one that would talk any cat's ear off if given half the chance. He also inherited his mother's critical nature and her passion. Silverkit took more after their father as the moons passed, brave and kind but also a bit hot-headed at times. Maplekit grew up sweet and caring if not a bit sheltered and stubborn. It was happily ever after for their family now and they grew up loved and nurtured by both of their doting parents. When he began his training as an apprentice, Newtpaw was taken to the river for the first time. The water was moving calmly. He could remember that day well. He'd closed his eyes, listening intently to the sound of the water moving over the wrong. The sound it made was relaxing and he still often goes to the river when in need of some peace and calm. His mentor was trying to teach him a bit about fishing that day, as they'd made a pit stop on his tour of the territory and were hungry. It was the middle of newleaf, so they figured that catching prey to eat then and there wouldn't hurt much. Newtpaw was crouched, waiting for a fish to come by. When silver scaled flashed by unexpectedly, Newtpaw struck out wildly. He lost balance and tipped himself into the river. At first he panicked, writhing against the water as it clawed at his pelt. He mewled pitifully and wondered why his mentor was sitting calmly still on the bank. Water was his ears, his nose, everywhere. He called out to his mentor, but they made no move. It wasn't until he looked again that he realized they were trying to help him by telling him what to do. Kick, Newpaw. Kick against the water, one paw after the other. As it turned out, he was a natural swimmer and, after he stopped panicking, he found that he loved every second of it. He swims often now and enjoys challenging his mentor to races in the water. |
